Trial and Error
A doctor has trial experiment for an experimental treatment! They’re looking for volunteers for their study. You’ll even be compensated for your troubles. Just watch out for those side effects.
-----------------
Star regarded the strange alien carefully, the purple hue of his skin didn’t look natural for him somehow and hints of the pale pinky orange tone that she tended to associate with humans around his eyes and lips bothered her. The six arms however didn’t really bother her that much it was the fact that his clothing, which consisted of a white coat that looked like a lab coat, had clearly been modified after the fact of his acquiring it. It made her wonder just what it was that this man had done to himself to gain the extra limbs and gave her cause for pause on the offer he had presented to her. From the sounds of it he had asked several Namekians prior to finding her little farm away from the main villages and was desperate enough to ask the floating crocodile for her assistance provided she was capable of regeneration as the others on World could. She was reluctant but he claimed that his serum was capable of super charging the regenerative process within Namekians allowing the regrowth of injuries and even limbs in record time.
She had to admit she was a little intrigued by the concept and was weighing up her options. She didn’t trust this stranger a damn inch. He’d evidently experimented on himself somehow and she didn’t believe him when he said he’d compensate her properly for her time with him and allowing him to observe the effectiveness of the serum. To be honest it sounded like he wanted to experiment upon her and just wanted to know what the heck this serum even did. She didn’t trust him that much at least yet. But he tried to explain just what was going on to her, in this case he was looking for a valuable piece of information on this serum but alas he would be unable to use it on himself as he had no real regenerative capabilities. It needed a race that could naturally regrow limbs. The idea behind it would be that the Serum would speed up this rate of regrowth allowing the subject to heal and recover much faster than normal.
This actually appealed to Star on some level, her regenerative capacity had been insufficient during her bouts to enable her to continue to fight through her opponents levels of pain. It had been quite the upsetting time for the Superior to have been felled so easily by her foes. At least that’s what it always seemed to feel like for her in those situations. She couldn’t exactly comprehend just what had occurred. Where the sudden surge of power had come from the human nor the absolute barrage of damage that the Namekian had been able to produce. In both cases the fight had started off well enough for her she was seemingly making headway and started to wear her opponent down. Presumably they realised this as well and went all out afterwards. Something which she was just unable to handle at present. Having her regeneration super charged to some degree would certainly even those odds in her favour.
Even then she wasn’t entirely just going to agree, asking the stranger quite why the Namekian’s hadn’t accepted his offer, it sounded too good to be true really so what was the real catch here? He was offering money and potentially just power in the form of an increased survivability and yet no one had taken him up on this lovely little trick? He seemed somewhat reluctant to answer her properly. Claiming that the Namekians simply lacked the vision that was required to see the sense in what he offered and he added a small shot at Star’s ego, adding that he could only hope that she was more sensible than the others on this world. That was probably what did it, she’d always thought of herself as better than the Namekians, despite them having been capable of beating her in a fight right now. Misplaced or not she knew that when the time came and she was able to actually assume her completed form she’d make them all see just what they had been messing about with. Appealing to that ego was either a smart move on the scientists part or just a lucky one as she reluctantly agreed to his treatment after some reassurances that he knew exactly what this would do.
Once the stranger had managed to get the needle past her scales which was a difficult undertaking in of itself as she had clearly gotten tougher after her initial forays. He carefully pushed the little plunger on the syringe and the Croc watched as the strange yellow liquid slowly drained into her bloodstream. She waited a short while but didn't really feel any different. Then again it was supposed to aid her regeneration and he was watching rather intently so she chewed off her own arm and spat it on the ground beside her and watched the stump with care to see if it grew back any quicker. She was vaguely disappointed in the results. It seemed no different to normal, the doctor however seemed ecstatic and pointed to the arm that has been severed. As Star watched the arm writhed and wobbled about. Starting to grow what looked very much like another copy of Star herself. The tiny Croc glaring daggers at this doppelganger while the doctor danced from one foot to the other cheering that his experiment had been a success.
Just what do you mean success? Your serum made a copy if me from my arm
A bad copy at that. It thinks it's the real deal.
He’s excited about it, he knew this would happen...
So he is, I wonder if it’ll keep happening.
It’d certainly be an edge in combat to start replicating each time we’re seriously injured
Both of the crocs started to advance of the scientist who only now realised just what their intentions seemed to be. He was less intimidated than one in his situation would seemingly be and one of his hands flew to his coat, revealing a small hand held blaster which he held up with an impressively sturdy grip. Star had expected it to be shaking and wobbling about in nervousness. Frankly with whatever this serum was that he’d injected her with she was unafraid of a small little weapon. Besides, any serious injury would only result in another of her to give this man even more problems to deal with than he’d want to have. As it was the two of her would likely be more than enough of a nightmare for this unfortunate scientist. The copy of her Darting forwards and looking to get a bite off on the man’s neck. She stayed back seeing the other move, instead manifesting the scales made of energy to go darting off and after the hand holding the gun.
Both attempts failed quite impressively, some sort of forcefield preventing the other’s jaws from getting close and her own attempt giving a good indicator of where the field was. But how to get through it. Both of their attempts had been front facing sure and they’d need to try and see if there was a limit to the shield, both in defending him all around and in it’s overall effectiveness. It’d managed to bounce both of her off right away though and that was a little unsettling especially when he started firing at her. The croc hunkering up as small lasers slammed into her scales almost ineffectually, there was a residual warmth and heat that was proving to be rather painful from each blow. It wasn’t quite like an overwhelming ki blast but somehow it was more annoying. She twisted as the barrage stopped and glanced at herself. It seemed that it’d left some kind of substance on her that was trying to eat away at her body to judge from the pain and the look of it. She’d have little choice but to end things quickly with this ass hole and his stupid experiment now. Though as she caught herself getting distracted she was happy to note that the other of her was keeping him busy and making good use of the time he wasted shooting at her to harass him and had pushed the shield to failure by constantly hammering into it.
Star stayed back, wary of further nasty tricks from this strange man and decided to push him as hard as she could from her distant point. Firing wave after wave of small cutting scales for him, aiming for anything useful, hands, knees, eyes. It wasn’t hard to incapacitate him without his shield and even moreso with the other Star hammering him constantly and keeping his gaze away from her. That pain was starting to weigh rather heavily on her mind however. This stuff wasn’t letting up and she apparently wasn’t regenerating anything like fast enough to just ignore it. With the asshole at least downed however. She drifted over to him and circled him along with the other Star, nodding at her and then him
All yours if you want the meal. I doubt any of the others out there are going to care about this one. I need to recover
You do? How weak. I’d snack on you too, only I think I’d get weaker for it.
That insult stung. Apparently she just wasn’t going to get along well with herself, even though they were literally the same person. She had to wonder if there was going to be some kind of other side effects however. If this strange serum had weakened her in order to make the other copy. There was some sense to it, but to be honest the likely problem was in fact the damn shots the man had fired were just constantly eating into her. She couldn’t risk tearing chunks off her body because it’d likely just spawn another copy and with the current pair of them already seemingly at each other’s throat in small petty ways. Any more would only make the situation worse. Star floated off towards the nearest river source. Hoping that by cleaning off the burning impacts they’d have a better chance to heal.
Even if it didn’t have any effect, the water felt good. The cool water hit the poor overheating croc like a dose of blessed salvation as she dived beneath, swimming low before shooting back towards the sky and spinning dry. Yup, it had to have been some kind of residue left from the shots, having gone through the water her back was healing rather easily again. She sighed with relief and started heading back to her farm, suddenly conscientious of the fact that her attacks and his might have torn up the tiny little space and headed back as quickly as possibly
Once she’d gotten back, the other star and her probable meal had apparently vanished. Presumably the other copy of the superior had left, knowing full well as Star had done that the two of them would likely clash and fight were they left in the same space together. It was a little troublesome though to think that there was going to be another of her running around. But then again it did give her a wonderful idea. It possibly wasn’t the nastiest thing either. But it had a shot, her instinct had been to eat the other of her own kind. So likely it was the real reason there were multiple of them being produced. They needed to consume one another in order to attain their true state, it was a survival of the fittest. She intended to be the one still standing at the end of it all. Though that did mean she’d have to find a way back to Earth, it was unlikely that she was going to just be able to hitch a ride on a stray shuttle. There was likely another way but it involved the old man that had come to visit her before and had offered her so much beforehand that she just had not accepted at the time.
Now though, she had plans on how to use that strange man’s generosity and if he acted like she expected him not to. She’d have a wonderful chance at taking on the first of them and claiming her to improve herself, especially since she seemed to get a little bit of the people she ate. Maybe that was the true strength of her kind. The more species and people they ate. The better their bodies and minds really became. She was aware that unlike herself who was taught language by the computer she had encountered. Tsuki acquired speech from the creator she’d consumed. She had picked up two languages easily enough from her victims and a grab bag of memories. So maybe eating her copy wouldn’t help much. But anything that had a different experience to her would be worth the while.
